Schools of Croatian language and culture in overseas countries
with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Croatian Schools Abroad in America and Canada
September 18-20, 2024. Zagreb

About the Conference

After the Second World War, Croatian emigrants moved to overseas countries such as America, Canada and Australia. In their new countries,  they felt the need to maintain the traditions of their native land. They were helped in this by the Catholic Church, which founded missions, parishes and Croatian language and culture schools in the places where they settled. Gathered around the Church, emigrants developed their social life, nurtured the folklore, music and customs of Croatia, and founded Croatian communities and various associations. The school organization HIŠAK - Croatian Overseas Schools of America and Canada was founded in 1974 in New York at the initiative of a group of Croatian priests and intellectuals from America and Canada, as an umbrella institution for Croatian schools in overseas countries. It assumed the role of connecting and coordinating Croatian schools overseas, and later in some European countries. HIŠAK's task was, among others, to provide support to teachers through the organization of professional seminars and training, as well as to organize the production and printing of textbooks, manuals and other teaching materials for learning Croatian language and culture, and to coordinate and connect Croatian schools with each other, as well as to establish a connection with the motherland.

The purpose of this meeting is to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the HIŠAK organization, and in the spirit of the vision of its founders, to consider initiatives and opportunities for developing  stronger connections between Croatian schools in overseas countries and with the Republic of Croatia. In this direction, the joint task, from a scientific and research point of view, is to analyze and evaluate the previous experiences in the work of HIŠAK and, based on these experiences, to focus on a new, joint, systematic reflection in designing the concept. The fundamental goal would be to establish a more effective connection between the homeland and Croatian expatriates in overseas countries through educational activities of learning, nurturing and preserving the Croatian language and culture. The teaching of the Croatian language and culture in overseas countries should be established on the basis of a unified curriculum, uniform methods and teaching practices, trained teachers, adapted textbooks and other teaching media that would help achieve this goal. Accepted abstracts will be published in a book of abstracts before the conference. The presented papers that pass the review process will be published in the proceedings after the meeting
